Fear for America: A Twitter Initiative of the U.S. Department of Fear

Established by an executive order of the Vice President in 2004, the United States Department of Fear was created to increase fear in the interest of national security. Rather than scaling back the Department as some had hoped, the Obama administration made fear a permanent fixture of American life.

In 2010 the Department of Fear established a social media presence and began tweeting about their activities. Though controversial, the @FearDept Twitter account attracted a significant following. In the wake of the NSA leaks, Department staff meticulously culled the best tweets to prove how important and persuasive they are. The result is a work that covers the entire known scope of the Department’s activities.
